What the Nobel Means for Microcredit?

October 14, 2006 · Leave a Comment

On Friday, Oct. 13, Grameen Bank of Bangladesh and its founder, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for helping to establish the microcredit movement, which involves the granting of small loans to poor people with no collateral, across the developing world (see BusinessWeek.com, 12/26/2005, “Nobel Winner Yunus: Microcredit Missionary”). The Norwegian Nobel Committee’s statement said it awarded the prize of $1.4 million to Yunus and the bank “for their efforts to create economic and social benefit from below.” The statement continued, “Lasting peace cannot be achieved unless large population groups find ways in which to break out of poverty.”

Still, when you think of the benefits of small loans, achieving peace and stability isn’t the first idea that springs to mind. But it is exactly (more…)

An Examination of Muhammad’s Relationship with a Nine-Year-Old Girl

By David Wood

For the Western mind, perhaps the most disturbing fact about Islam is that its founder had a sexual relationship with a nine-year-old girl. Because of this, it has become increasingly popular in some circles to refer to the Prophet of Islam as a “pedophile.” This is, of course, extremely offensive to Muslims, who view Muhammad as (more…)

how you can get your product in front of millions thru QVC

October 14, 2006 · 1 Comment

Over the past 15 years, TV shopping networks have exploded onto the retail scene, offering viewers an interactive shopping experience without ever having to leave their living rooms. It’s proven to be an extremely successful formula, creating loyal, consistent customers (who are primarily female) who relish the products and the experience. In fact, QVC is considered by some measures to be the second-largest TV network in the country, with millions of daily viewers tuning in and making purchases. QVC has also been a great boon to entrepreneurs, who can achieve extremely high exposure in a short period of time–even for new products.

So how do you get your product onto the promised land of QVC? And what are the pros and cons? I recently entered the QVC world with one of our Mom Invented products–Good Bites Crustless Sandwich Cutters–and I’d like to share my experience to help entrepreneurs who might be (more…)

Uganda: More Oil is Found

October 14, 2006 · Leave a Comment

Kampala

TULLOW oil and Heritage Oil, partners in exploration area 3A, expect up to 500 million barrels of oil at the Kingfisher well in Hoima.

“Based on the success of the well to date, Tullow oil and its partner heritage oil, hope to find up to 500 million barrels of oil,” Tom Hickey, Tullow’s chief financial officer, said in a statement.

The company announced that the joint venture had found oil and gas after drilling just 2,000 metres of the projected 4,000 metres.

“Discovery of oil and gas at this point justifies the group’s decision to target Uganda, which has been relatively unexplored.

Hickey stressed that the positive signs would have no direct bearing on what the group may encounter at 4,000 metres.

“But based on the current indications, Tullow and Heritage are hoping to discover a well containing up to 500m barrels of oil,” Hickey said.

He said if the well delivers the expected amount, this would double Tullow’s total oil reserves overnight and add significantly to its revenue stream and earning potential in the years ahead.

The group’s shares have already shot up by 4.8% after the find.

The joint venture is to carry out tests to establish whether the oil can flow out of the ground, its quality and quantity.

This will start within a month at four levels. It is scheduled to take up to three weeks.

Meanwhile, Hardman resources, which is exploring block 2 with Tullow, released a statement yesterday saying they had signed a memorandum of understanding with the Government, relating to the investment plans for exploration area 2, where they recently found huge volumes of commercial oil.

The memorandum includes commitments by the joint venture partners and the Government to advance appraisal and development activities to realise the full potential of discoveries on block 2 and provide time to explore the rest of the block.

According to the statement signed by Simon Potter, the chief executive officer, the next oil well to be explored in November will be Nzizi, to the south of Mputa-1.

The joint venture will also undertake further studies to ascertain the volume of the existing discoveries as well as explore the northern area of the block to identify prospects for drilling in 2007 and 2008.

They will also evaluate the most effective manner to drill offshore prospects around Lake Albert by the end of 2007.
