The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) disclosed yesterday it has apportioned $7bn out of the nation’s external reserves, which stood at $38.07 bn as at the end of July, to 14 global asset managers and their 14 Nigerian banks local partners, to manage.

There is approximately 6700 languages around the world, and several die every year. Some are found in remote regions of vast countries and are spoken only by a single village of people. Some by only a few people, and when those people die or forget their native tongue, the language becomes extinct, because even though written accounts of the language remain, the pronunciation and precise grammar usage will be lost forever. As mass globalization increases, the problem is becoming more prevalent. People are losing part of their cultural identity.

India’s publishing industry reflects the scale and diversity of the subcontinent itself — around 12,000 publishers publish roughly 80,000 titles every year in the country’s 24 official languages.
The industry is estimated to have an annual turnover of over $1 billion and there is still plenty of potential for growth.
Around one third of the annual book production is in English and the remainder in Hindi, Tamil, Bengali and other languages. (more…)

Mittal Steel South Africa signed a contract in Maputo on Friday pledging to purchase the assets of two ruined engineering companies, the steel rolling mill, CSM, and the wire- drawing company Trefil.
The man responsible for the parlous state of these two companies, Portuguese businessman Antonio Simoes, has not set foot in Mozambique for many years. His company, EMM, bought 60 per cent holdings in the companies, when they were privatised a decade and a half ago, but never provided the promised investment. (more…)

Jonah Iboma examines the increasing penetration of Africa by global players and its impact on competition Mobile telephony sector in Africa has increasingly witnessed acquisitions. This had led to the emergence of multinational and pan-regional players dominating the sector and increasing their ability to compete in the market with other global players.
The latest is the purchase of controlling stake in Vmobile Nigeria by Celtel International and MTN’s acquisition of Investcom International, a telecoms group with operations in six African countries besides its coverage in the Middle East.

MARIJUANA cultivation and clan clashes are two major challenges the newly appointed Tarime District Commissioner, Mr Stanely Kolimba, is likely to face.
The district’s track record of infamous cultivation of the drug actually puts Mara region in the law enforcers’ map of the leading marijuana producers in the country.
Policemen and women in the region though have been grappling with the crime, marijuana cultivation is still rampant in rural areas.
Reports have it that the illicit drug attracts lucrative markets in one of the neighboring countries. Tarime residents are, therefore, likely to violate laws of the country to embark on marijuana cultivation.
