Open registrations began this week for .mobi top level domain names — a space on the Internet designed exclusively for sites catering to mobile phones and other wireless devices.

Backers of the .mobi domain — including tech giants such as Microsoft, Google, Vodafone, Ericsson, Samsung, T-Mobile, and
Nokia — are hoping the new registry will be treated as the mobile equivalent to the ubiquitous dot-com and will help focus attention on mobile-Internet innovations.

Kenya has a chance of making it to Ghana 2008 despite the odds facing them, Harambee Stars coach Robert Matano has said.
“After the draw in Tanzanian, we are convinced of qualifying for the finals in Ghana. The team showed great character and can top the group,” Matano said on Monday on arrival from Tanzania, where they drew 0-0 with their hosts on Saturday.

Presidential incumbent Levy Mwanawasa is to be sworn-in on Tuesday after winning a second and final term in office with 42 percent of the vote after his nearest rival conceded defeat and called on his supporters not to dispute the results.
Clashes between security forces and supporters of presidential candidate Michael Sata rocked several Zambian towns on Sunday amid allegations of wide-scale fraud after Sata’s initial clear lead in the first two days of the vote count waned.
Final results by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) gave Sata 29 percent with Hakainde Hichilema, head of the three-party United Democratic Alliance, in third place on 25 percent of the 2.52 million votes cast. (more…)
