Fujitsu: New business tablet PCs with fingerprint sensors

Hitachi laptop first with vein-recognition

Hitachi Manufacturing Corporation will release the “FLORA Se210″ mobile notebook PC intended for enterprise use o­n December 1st. It contains no hard drive and uses Windows XP Embedded, and Hitachi is marketing it as a “secure client solution” terminal. (more…)

Olympus to bring out cameras with wooden casings

There’s some new threeeeeeeeeeeee-dimensional wood molding technology from Olympus that takes Japanese Cyprus wood and compresses it so it’s harder than industrial plastic. Add a nice finish and you get wood that’s moldable for manufacturing yet hard enough to be used as casing for standard consumer electronics. Obviously Olympus’s immediate plans include using the new technology on their digital cameras. (more…)

KDDI and Toyota get together for TiMO

The “TiMO” is a new handset being released by Toyota, branded by au. It’s a joint effort between Toyota Motor Corporation and KDDI, based on Toshiba’s “W44T” handset. The specs are the same as the W44T, but there’s on key difference: hands-free connection with Toyota’s official Bluetooth Navigation System. We unfortunately don’t have any details on exactly what this connection entails (if anything beyond using Bluetooth for hands-free talking), so hopefully we’ll hear something about it from Toyota. TWO TANZANIANS SLAIN IN DETROIT

Two Tanzanians were shot dead over the weekend by unknown assailants in Detroit, Michigan, and so far no motive of the murder has been established nor suspects apprehended.

Tanzania’s Ambassador to Washington, Mr Andrew Mhando Daraja, confirming the reports here last night named the deceased as the late Walter Mazula and Vonetha Nkya.

Mr Daraja said the two met their violent deaths in the East side of Detroit late Saturday afternoon. (more…)

Somalia: Protests After Islamic Courts Take Kismayo

At least one person was killed on Monday as forces belonging to the Union of Islamic Courts (UIC) fired shots to disperse rowdy anti-Islamist demonstrators in Kismayo, 500 km south of the Somali capital of Mogadishu, hours after the UIC took control of the key port city.

Goodbye Wi-Fi: wireless signals get maximized

It’s almost a given these days that Clearwire, the Wi-Max wireless network founded by cellular pioneer Craig McCaw, will shake up the wireless broadband sector. “If anyone is going to do it, it’s going to be Clearwire,” says Joe Laszlo, a senior broadband analyst at JupiterResearch in New York. “They’ve got the best technology, great financing, and a lock on nationwide spectrum.” The only real question seems to be how deep into the telecom establishment the shock waves from McCaw’s latest bit of disruption will penetrate.

Clearwire’s initial goal is to create a nationwide broadband wireless network based on Wi-Max, a more powerful relative of Wi-Fi technology. Because Wi-Max (more…)
